Course content
Basic characteristics and attributes of information technology. Types of computer networks from different respects, advantages and disadvantages, network operating systems. Structure and operation of a computer network (access rights, file attributes, Novell NetWare-structures of directories, disc mapping). Network technology. Internet - characteristics, Internet as a source of information. Computer as an element of a computer network. Basic classification of computers, hardware, structure of a computer and its individual functional blocks. Peripheries (printers, scanners, etc.). Multimedia. Basic computer software. Operating systems - characteristics, classification, MSDOS, superstructure of Windows 3.1X, WINDOWS 95/98/2000/Me/XP, operation, characteristics, differences, multitasking. Application software - classification and features of programmes. Office programme packages. Graphic programmes. Compression programmes - purpose, classification, characteristics. Presentation programmes. Computer viruses and protection against them, types of viruses according to different aspects, antivirus programmes, symptoms of viruses, basics of safe PC work.

Learning outcomes
Basic characteristics and attributes of information technologies. Types of computer networks, advantages, disdvatages. Construction and maintenance of a computer network. Internet. Computer components, structure, types of computers, hardware, software. Safety of work.
On completion of the course, students should be able to: define basic terms used in IT and explain relations between them; be familiar with basic structure of computer networks, and with computer hardware and software.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of informatics and computer skills at secondary school level
