Course content
1. Introduction, periodization of history 2. Physical education in the beginnings of human civilization 3. Physical culture of the oldest civilizations a) Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, India b) Ancient Greece (Crete, Athens, Sparta, Pan-hellenic games, Olympic games) c) Rome 4. Physical culture in the Middle Ages 5. Physical culture in modern times a) physical culture at the aristocratic court b) folk culture and its relationship to the physical activities c) personalities: J. A. Komenský, D. Diderot, J. J. Rousseau 6. "Long" 19th century a) period characteristic, social moods, changes across the Europe b) physical education systems (Swedish, German, natural trends); modern Olympisc c) 19th century in the Czech countries (politic situtation, Czech-German relationships; leisure time phenomenon) d) PA assiciations - Sokol, Orel, DTJ, KCT, Scout, Turnverein e) sport clubs; Czech Olympic Committee f) history of school based physical education g) womens´ sport and PE 7. Worl Wars and inter-war period; estabilishment of the Czechoslovakia; Czech participation at international competitions; development of the PA and sport associations (Scout, Woodcraft, tramping - hiking)

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce to the students the development of physical culture in the context of historical development from prehistoric times to the present. The course provides basic information about Czech and world history of physical education and sport. Information about this course was translated to English within the project Internationalization of the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University, Olomouc, No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0028, co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Government of the Czech Republic.
Upon completion of the course the student knows the most significant milestones in the history of Czech and world physical culture and is able to put the history in the context of contemporary physical culture.
