Learning outcomes
The course familiarizes students with the basic structure of sociological knowledge in terms of sociological concepts, theories and authors. The course focuses on the following sociological traditions: sociology of conflict, sociology of rationality, Durkhemian sociology, and interactionism. Each sociological tradition is elaborated in terms of its philosophical roots, classical authors and influential theories. The course concludes with a discussion of synthesis by Randall Collins, whose categorisation of sociological traditions is used throughout the course.
The course familiarizes the students with the basic structure of sociological knowledge, furthemore sociological concepts, approaches and personalities. The course is divided into the following sections: company, man-a social being. Social action; deviant behaviour. Each part is discussed from the viewpoint of the theory of structural functionalism, theory of conflict, phenomenological sociology, symbolic interakcionismu and the theory of rational choice. The course ends with information about postmodernism, construktivism, and poststrukturalism in sociology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Students have to pass an oral examination. They have to demonstrate knowledge of basic sociological concepts, theories and authors, with the ability to contextualize them within particular sociological traditions.
