Course content

The aim of the course is a deeper understanding of the relationship between literature and cinematography. The strategies of the adaptation process are illustrated by two case studies, both taken from the filmography of Bernardo Bertolucci: 1. Film Prima della rivoluzione (1964), a free adaptation of Stendhal's novel La chartreuse de Parma, rich in various literary influences. 2. Il conformista (1970), adaptation of the homonymous novel by Alberto Moravia. Each film is accompanied by presentations, the aim of which is to clarify the features of the literary model and to introduce novels and films into the historical and cultural context of the time. The screening of the film is followed by a detailed analysis of the most important sequences, always in relation to its literary models. Professional texts will be used to interpret selected films and literary texts. All materials will be available in moodle. The course ends with an oral interview and a short written work verifying the knowledge and skills based on the content of the course.

Learning outcomes

The aim of courses in Italian Literature and Film is to enhance students' interpretive skills. Film adaptation is already a form of interpretation: courses in Italian literature and film emphasize its historical and ideological features through the analysis of formal solutions of the adaptation process. During the courses the literary texts will be analyzed in comparison with their film adaptations, in order to highlight the linguistic and expressive specificity of literature and cinema and strengthen the students' skills of comparison and reflection, also in the perspective of a independent analysis of other texts.
