Course content
1. Biomechanics - definitions, history, development, cross-curricular links. 2. Kinematic aspects of biomechanics - movement types. Projectile motion. 3. Dynamic aspects of biomechanics - internal and external force. Principle of movement. 4. Principle of take-off - dynamic analysis, effect of ground type on take-off. Vertical jump. 5. Interaction of the motion system with external environment. 6. Balance - balance conditions, static and dynamic balance. 7. System structure and behaviour. System and its surroundings. Dynamic systems characteristics. 8. Skeletal system - bone structure, type of bone loading. Effect of selected factors on bone resistance. Bone remodelling. 9. Ligaments, tendons, cartilage - biomechanical factors. 10. Muscle subsystem - muscle structure, principle of muscle contraction. Muscle architecture. Motor unit, gradation of muscle force. 11. Muscle subsystem - Hill muscle model, SSC cycle. Work and energy in muscle contraction. 12. Nervous subsystem. 13. Muscle force, force decomposition. Rotatory and stabilizing components of muscle force. Lever system of the human body. The three classes of levers. 14. Methods of biomechanical research.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce to the students the physical basics of biomechanics and the basics of biomechanics of the movement system, and the methodology of biomechanical research. Throughout the course the students will get a general overview of methodological procedures applicable in a Bachelor's thesis. A part of the seminars is focused on specific problems of this field of study. Information about this course was translated to English within the project Internationalization of the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University, Olomouc, No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0028, co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Government of the Czech Republic.
Upon completion of the course the student is able to: describe the biomechanical principles of basic locomotion; explain biomechanical properties of tissues in the human body; select basic biomechanical research methods for producing the final thesis.
Prerequisites
Understanding secondary school mechanics. Basic knowledge about the human body confirmed by an anatomy exam.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Dialog

Active participation in classes (80%), submission and presentation of a paper on a given topic, written knowledge test, colloquium.
