This course focuses on formation and changes of international system (IS) through combining historical development of IS with a theoretical overview. The course is based on chronological order mostly and discussing issues from premodern era to present times. Lectures will focus on period since the middle of 17th century (Westphalian order) with particular emphasis on the last century (development since 1914), but a brief overview of premodern situation will be taken into consideration too. The course will discuss phenomena such as importance of state formations, international alliance making and existence of power blocks, colonialism and imperialism. Besides cold war, a detailed attention will be paid to bipolar, post-bipolar and today's nature of IS. Lectures will pay equal attention to European and American as well as non-Western problems and players of IS.
The student will demonstrate the ability to: - interpret the development of international relations in the time span covered by this course, i.e. up to the beginning of the 21st century - analyse the main actors of the international system and their transformation over time - types of international systems in the development of humanity (multipolar, bipolar, unipolar, etc.) - present key processes and events in the development of international relations (e.g. the impact of the Cold War on the operation of the international system) - summarise the essential features of compulsory reading, including compulsory books |
