Learning outcomes
The compulsory course The Development of Political Systems in Europe traces the most important developmental lines of political systems of selected European countries in the period preceding the constitution of the current political system. The following political systems will be discussed during the semester: - France from the Revolution of 1789 to the fall of the Fourth Republic - Germany of the Second Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era - Fascist movements in the political systems of interwar Europe - Russia and the Soviet Union from late tsarism to the end of the communist system - Italy from unification, through the fascist system, to the end of the First Republic This approach is chosen in view of the fact that current problems of political systems in Europe are analyzed in other courses taught at KPES, such as Comparisons of Political Systems (KPE/BKPSZ and BKPSV).
The competencies that a student acquires by successfully completing the course: - The ability to analyze the political systems of the main European countries and Russia, which were present in the countries or regions before the emergence of the current political systems. - the ability to identify long-term typical and unique trends and tendencies in a given political system - the ability to compare different political systems - application of the analysis of historically closed political systems to the present or contemporary political system (e.g. how the experience of Nazism is reflected in the constitutional order of the Federal Republic of Germany, how the lack of coming to terms with the legacy of communism affects contemporary Russia, etc.)
