Learning outcomes
The course introduces major international conflicts from the beginning of the Cold War to the early 21st century. It introduces students to the genesis of major conflicts, actors, course and outcomes. Each case is highlighted for its specificity and significance to the history of warfare and the development of international conflict. The short- and long-term implications of the conflicts for the region and for the development of global international relations are discussed. The course focuses in particular on conflicts with trans-regional overlap, long-lasting and fundamentally affecting international relations. Using this criterion, students will learn about the Korean War, the Vietnam War (especially after the U.S. entry), the Israeli-Arab wars, the Kashmir conflict, the Soviet involvement in Afghanistan, the eight-year conflict between Iraq and Iran, the first Gulf War, post-Soviet conflicts, and the war in the former Yugoslavia. The last topic will focus on the global war on terror. For each war conflict, as in the case of KPE/BMK1, attention will be paid to: a) causes; b) actors; c) course; d) consequences; e) the vicissitudes of conflict; and, where appropriate, the impact of conflict on technological progress (and vice versa).
The competencies that a student acquires by successfully completing the course: - The ability to perform basic analysis of the studied conflicts, namely: (a) causes; b) the actors; c) the course; d) consequences; e) the breaking point of the conflict (f) the impact of the conflict on technological progress (and vice versa) - placing the conflict in the broader framework of international relations
