Course content
1. The objectives, the subject matter and the methods of musicology as a modern science. The relations of musicology with other, related, scientific disciplines. 2. The definition of music, the interpretation of the term music or musica. 3. The musicology institutions in the Czech Republic. 4. Instructional musicological literature and the issues of musicological systematics. 5. The development of the contribution of music until the birth of modern music studies in the 19th Century. The ancient music theory, etc. up until Kiesewetter and Ambros. 6. The creation of a scientific interest in music (music criticism and journalism, historical research, scientifically-oriented research, ethnological research of music). Basic innovative trends creating the musicological paradigm. 7. Music studies in the 19th Century. The important founding personalities of modern musicology, especially the works of G. Adler and H. Riemann. 8. The major development features, trends and personalities of the world of musicology, after Riemann and Adler. 9. The birth of Czech music studies. The founding personalities - Hostinský, Nejedlý and Helfert. Czech music studies in the 20th and 21st Century. 10. Heuristic. Basic rules for heuristic in musicology. The source base of musicology and the relation of the source with the literature. Primary sources in musicology. 11. The technical disclosure of sources, editorial techniques - familiarization with basic editorial projects. 12. Secondary sources. An overview of the world and domestic key musicological literature, key music lexicographical works. 13. Musicological documentation (libraries, archives, collections, museums), the areas and ways of musicological documentation and documentation projects.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on musicology, its goals, subject of study and methods. It also presents a brief history of this branch of knowledge (trends, concepts, figures and important works), its systematic classification and subdisciplines. Issues related to heuristic, documentation and lexicography are also discussed.
Familiarizing oneself with the subject matter, the methods and the objectives of the music studies and understanding the subject systematics. Familiarizing oneself with the work areas of a musicologist. Students will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge of the methodology of music studies in the first individual seminar papers, in the music studies introductory course, and consequently in the courses on the individual stages of the history of music or in the courses on systematic musicology.
