Course content
|
1. General questions Terminology, historical and systematic questions of the theory of musical notation, paleography of music 2. Cheironomy, ekphonetic notation and letter notation Cheironomy, ekphonetic notation (including prosodic signs of ancient Greece) and letter notation (Greek vocal and instrumental notation, medieval letter systems), Quidonian hand, the system of hexachords 3. Latin neumes Definition of the term and development of neumatic notations, development of research in neumatic notations, typology of kinds and signs 4. Nota choralis The same as with the neumatic notation, with more of regard to situation in the Czech lands 5. Mensural notations ? the questions of transcription Modal notation Pre-Franconian and Franconian notation Black mensural notation White mensural notation

Learning outcomes
|
The course introduces into questions of notation of music. It gives a survey of the most important notational systems of European music, whereas students should gain the basic ability to transcribe example facsimiles into modern notation.
Students gain knowledge of historical notational systems and basic ability of their transcription into modern notation.

Prerequisites
|
Students should be well acquainted with the history of early music.

|
Mark, Seminar Work
a) Reliable knowledge of questions of historical development in the amount of lectured topics and obligatory literature (Rybarič, SČHK) b) Reliable knowledge of principles gaining examined notational systems and their transcription (with special emphasis on neumatic signs and mensural notation signs ? here mainly reading of ligatures) c) appropriate elaboration of correspondence homework
