Learning outcomes
The course introduces into questions of notation of music. It gives a survey of the most important notational systems of European music, whereas students should gain the basic ability to transcribe example facsimiles into modern notation.
Students will understand the notation principles used in various historical periods. They will be able to identify given examples according to the different historical notation styles from the 12th Century until the 15th Century. Students will be able to transcribe the less complex notations of the medieval polyphonic music into the modern notation. Students will be familiar with the music context of notation and historical forms and genres.
Prerequisites
Students should be well acquainted with the history of early music and questions of the notation of homophonic music.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Seminar Work

a) sufficient knowledge of the historical development issues covered in class and in the basic literature (Rybarič, SČHK) b) sufficient knowledge of the principles of the notation systems covered and of the principles of their transcript (with special emphasis on the relations in mensuration and ligatures) c) transcription of the selected mensural notation examples with editorial adjustments (students will use a notation software) and completing a transcription report. d) successful transcription of a short segment from the selected example
