Course content
1. Tones and Tone System The definition of sound, tone, noise. Names of tones and their characteristics. Whole tone, semitone, enharmonic tones, diatonic and chromatic semitone. 2. Music Notation Names of notes, note symbols, keys, pauses, accidentals, divisions, and prolongation of notes and pauses. 3. Pitches and Systems of Tuning Absolute and relative pitch, 'A' as a standard for tuning, frequency, absolute and relative hearing. 4. Measure and Rhythm The definition of phenomena of kinetics (rhythm, meter, measure, beat, tempo, dynamics, accent, syncope, upbeat, etc.), the segmentation of measures. 5. Expression and Other Labels Italian musical terms; tempo, dynamics, way of performance and other markings. 6. Common Scales The definition of phenomena of scales, pitch, transposition, and modus. The circle of fourths, the circle of fifths, the enumeration of scales. Major and minor scales (natural minor scale, melodic minor scale, harmonic minor scale), same name and parallel scales. 7. Less Common Scales Major and minor pentatonic scales, the chromatic scale, the whole tone scale, the harmonic major scale, church scales (modes of major scale), Gypsy scales. 8. Intervals The definition of intervals, the division of intervals, inversions of intervals, enharmonic intervals, intervals overreaching the octave. 9. Chords The definition of the chord, the division of chords and their enumeration. 10. Fifth Chords The structure and principle of the formation of four non-altered fifth chords and their inversions. A practice from all tones. 11. Seventh Chords and Polychords The structure and principle of the formation of seven non-altered seventh chords and their inversions. A Practice from all tones. Specialised terminology used in practice. Ninth chords and polychords, fourth chords. 12.

Learning outcomes
The goal is to repeat and broaden music theory fundamentals needed for further study of music theoretical disciplines. Presentation includes definition of fundamental musical phenomenons and its practical workout.
Acquired knowledge: - the student knows basic elementary music phenomena - the student knows the principle of the creation of music notation, scales, intervals, chords Acquired skills: - the student orientates themselves in music materials - the student can analyse a musical notation Acquired qualifications: - the student uses acquired qualifications in theoretical reflection on music and in music analyses - the student applies acquired qualifications in theoretical as well as practical music service
