Course content
The student submits complete texts, or chapters of their dissertation, on dates specified by the educator and written in a required quality style. In accordance with their up to date as well as newly acquired knowledge, experience, intellectual abilities, and the help of their educator, they focus on new, so far unresolved issue. The seminar consists in individual consultations between the student and his tutor where they discuss concrete formal as well as content questions concerning a nascent extensive specialised study (40 to 60 standard pages, comments, summary, and extra attachments). 1. A wider context of the origin of dissertation consistent with the scientific orientation of the Department of Musicology of the Philosophical Faculty of Palacký University in Olomouc. The selection of the theme of the dissertation. 2. Recommended literature and sources for the chosen theme of the dissertation. 3. The structure and extent of the dissertation, the consistence of chapters, a documentation, citation standards. 4. The formulation of the chapter 'State of Sources and Literature 1'. The way of working with literature. 5. The formulation of the chapter 'State of Sources and Literature 2'. The way of working with sources. 6. The formulation of main chapters and subchapters of the work. 7. Fractional conclusions of chapters. The analysis and synthesis in the sphere of the chosen theme. 8. The revision of structure and title of the dissertation. The question of narrowing (or, conversely, widening) of the theme of the dissertation. A complementary use of sources and other literature focussed on the theme. 9. The formulation of a preliminary Conclusion. The contribution of the dissertation to the intellectual development of the graduate and to music science in general. The up to date character of the theme and of the way of its elaboration. 10. The formulation of a preliminary Introduction, or Preface. The formulation of Summary. Foreign language summaries. 11. Attachments, the list of literature and sources, possible indexes. 12. The final version of the text. A factual, terminological, and stylistic revision of the text of the dissertation. A preparation for the defence.

Learning outcomes
Regular weekly consultations of a student or a group of specialized students with the tutor or superviser of the diploma thesis/theses. Discussion-oriented seminar with emphasis on methodological issues connected to a various stages of the dissertation process.
Acquired knowledge: The student acquires expert knowledge in musical-historical, musical-theoretical, or other musicological sphere. Acquired skills: The student can independently work with literature and sources in a defined sphere of musicology. Acquired qualifications: The student is able to independently think critically, and create own conclusions concerning a given music issue.

The knowledge of the history and the theory of music and the musicological disciplines within the range of topics covered in the 1st and 2nd year of study. Self-available literature on the topics of diploma thesis promulgated by the Department of Musicology UP and the consultation with teachers of the department in order to qualified election of the thesis topics.
