Course content
Thematic areas: 1. The Introduction to Music Analysis The concept of music analysis, the brief history of analytical approach to music. 2. Methods of Music Analysis The brief overview of musical-analytical methods and of the historical background in which they have begun to be used. Questions of music repertoire that is suitable for the application of various analytical methods. 3. Musical-analytical Approach to the Symphony of the Classicism Period 1 An illustration of an analysis of a symphonic composition of the classicism period. After listening to the composition, students together with the lecturer discuss possible analytical perspectives, notice essential structural components of the composition, and in accordance with these observations, they suggest an analytical approach. 4. Musical-analytical Approach to the Symphony of the Classicism Period 2 After re-listening to the classical composition, students together with the lecturer analyse the composition. The lecturer highlights indispensable, structurally significant moments of the composition, and, also, highlights the role of the interpretation of ambiguous structural passages. 5. Musical-analytical Approach to the Song of the Romantic Period 1 An illustration of an analysis of a Romantic song. After listening to the composition, students together with the lecturer discuss possible analytical perspectives, notice essential structural components of the composition, and in accordance with these observations, they suggest an analytical approach. 6. Musical-analytical Approach to the Song of the Romantic Period 2 After re-listening to the song, students together with the lecturer analyse it. The lecturer highlights indispensable, structurally significant moments of the composition, and, also, highlights the role of the interpretation of ambiguous structural passages. 7. Musical-analytical Approach to the Chamber Composition of the First Half of the Twentieth Century 1 An illustration of an analysis of a chamber composition of the first half of the twentieth century. After listening to the composition, students together with the lecturer discuss possible analytical perspectives, notice essential structural components of the composition, and in accordance with these observations, they suggest an analytical approach. 8. Musical-analytical Approach to the Chamber Composition of the First Half of the Twentieth Century 2 After re-listening to a movement of the chamber composition, students together with the lecturer analyse it. The lecturer highlights indispensable, structurally significant moments of the composition, and, also, highlights the role of the interpretation of ambiguous structural passages. 9. Musical-analytical Approach to the Chamber Composition of the First Half of the Twentieth Century 3 The interpretation of results of the conducted analysis on the basis of the transformation of musical resources and of their hierarchy that took place in the music of the twentieth century. The use of musical analysis for the realisation of an individualised characteristic of the music style of a composer. 10. Musical-analytical Approach to the Symphony of the First Half of the Twentieth Century 1 An illustration of an analysis of a symphonic composition of the first half of the twentieth century. After listening to the composition, students together with the lecturer discuss possible analytical perspectives, notice essential structural components of the composition, and in accordance with these observations, they suggest an analytical approach. 11. Learning outcomes
This course introduces into different ways of a musical structure reflection and teaches how to analyze the structure into its elements and to identify in their interplay the organization of the stream of music. The course is based on related disciplines Musical Harmony and Musical Forms and wants to show the complex approach to musical artifact. Students are expected to understand the musical structure from different points o view.
Acquired knowledge: The student learns about various analytical approaches. Acquired skills: The student is able to suggest a suitable analytical approach to a composition of a specific period and musical type. The student is able to independently analyse a composition written during the era from classicism to the twentieth century. Acquired qualifications: The student is able to synthesise the knowledge of the musical history, musical theory, and own listening experience. The student can identify characteristic features of a specific period of the musical history in a musical structure, and is able to recognise the peculiarities of an individual composing style.
