Learning outcomes
The lecture is a basic overview of the topic of Czech emigration to the American continent, which has been individual since the 17th century and since 1848 it had a mass character. It will not only present the difficulties that immigrants have faced in obtaining permits or during their journey, but also in establishing them in a new country. Emphasis will also be placed on the historical development and current situation of the Czech colony in important areas such as Texas, Chicago or New York. Every territory has its own peculiarities. Finally, the situation of immigrants in the United States and other countries of the region such as Canada, Argentina, Brazil or Mexico will be compared.
At thecompletion of the course, students should get a basic idea of the migration process between the Czech lands and the American continent. They should not only orientate themselves in trends and routes, but also gain an overview of the social status of compatriots across the ocean. Their lives will be approached from different angles: political activity, identity and assimilation, language, literature, publishing, religion, society, traditions and customs. Students should use this theoretical knowledge when writing encyclopedic entries about the expatriate community and thus create an overall map of Czech emigration across the ocean.
