Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Introduction to the field of study. Principles of transcription of historical texts: transcription, transliteration. 2. Transcription rules for Czech texts. 3. Ligatures and abbreviations. Suspension, contraction, nomina sacra. 4. General and specific abbreviation symbols. Punctuation, diacritics, editorial symbols. 5. General overview of history of palaeography. 6. History of palaeographical studies in the Czechlands. Literature. 7. Archaeological and palaeographical writing materials. Wax tables. 8. Papyrus. Parchment. 9. Paper. Basics of filigranology. 10. Writing tools. Ink. Work of medieval scriber. 11. Development of Latin script. Scripts of other cultural areas (Glagolitic and Cyrillic scripts). 12. Development of Latin alphabet. Numbers. 13. Terminology of script analysis. Identification and differentiation of writing hands. Seminars will focus on transliteration of Latin texts written in Carolingian minuscule and transliteration and transcription of Czech texts written in gothic scripts.

Learning outcomes
Aim of the lectures is to provide students with general overview about the field and its history, bibliography and terminology, especially for the description of the script. Attention will be paid to writing materials, origins of Latin script and Latin alphabet. Aim of the seminars is to teach students to transliter simple texts written in Carolingian minuscule and transliter and transcribe (in case of Czech examples) texts written in gothic scripts.
Student knows terminology of the field and general history, writing materials and tools. Student is able to talk about development of Latin script and its alphabet, numbers, ligatures, symbols and abbreviations. Thanks to the seminars and homework students can transliter simple texts written in Carolingian minuscule and in gothic scripts and also transcribe Czech medieval texts.
Prerequisites
No special requirements. Advantage of knowledge of simultaneous study of Latin.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Written exam

Attendance at least 90%. Written preparation for seminars in form of filling in an online application. Written test (transliteration of Latin and transcription of Czech text).
