Course content
Seminar topics: 1. History and present of Numismatics. 2. Subject of numismatic research. 3. External characteristics and description of a coin. 4. Organization of minting and technology of coin manufacturing. 5. Coin deposits as historical source. 6. Monetary development of the Czech lands in the Middle Ages. 7. Monetary development of the Czech lands in the Early Modern Period. 8. Monetary development of the Czech lands in the 19th century. 9. Numismatics in written sources. 10. Introduction to Epigraphy - definition of the term, brief history, terminology. 11. Definition of inscription, characteristics of most usual bearers of the inscriptions (bells, funeral monuments).¨ 12. Principles of the description of a inscription. 13. Principles of creation of epigraphical catalogue.

Learning outcomes
Aim of the course is to introduce students with problematics of numismatics as a part of Auxiliary Historical Disciplines. Seminar will also introduce students to monetary historical development of the Czech lands - the most important types of means of payment and their meaning in context of economical-political development. Attention will be paid to the process of production of coin and technical processing. Emphasis wil be on general description of coins and their determination. In epigraphy students will be introduced to general development and division of this discipline. Attention will be paid to problematics of definition of inscription and characteristics of typical bearers of inscriptions in our area. Theoretical knowledge is to support the main aim of this part of the seminar, which is to teach students to describe inscription according to valid principles.
Student is able to orient in terminology, literature in the history of Numismatics and Epigraphy. He or she has an overview of monetary development in the Czech lands and its reflection in written sources and of a general techniques of coin manufacturing. In Epigraphy student is able to determine and describe bearers of inscriptions, has knowledge of principles for description of coins and inscriptions.
Prerequisites
General knowledge of Latin palaeography. Advantage of knowledge of Heraldry, Historical metrology and Latin.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Written exam

participation of at least 80 % presentation (approx. 10 minutes) on a pre-defined topic in numismatics description of the inscription according to standard epigraphic rules
