Course content
1. Book - its development. Manuscript, incunable, old print and bibliofilia. External characteristics of book and its content - author, editor, translator, printer, publisher, illuminator, illustrator, author of graphics, book-binder, and owner. Determination of different people around an old print and bibliofilia. 2. Division of books based on their content, book title, incipit, explicit, kolofone and copyright page. Bible, its translations, dictionaries and vocabularies, problematics of deuterocanonic books and apocryfs. Czech translations of Bible. Looking for terms in Bible dictionary and determination of quotes in concordance. 3. Liturgical books - missal, breviary, ordinals books. Codex iuris civilis and Codex iuris canonici. Identification of fragments of liturgical books. 4. Notations - neum, choral mensural. Different types of written and printed scripts. Determination of printing scripts of old prints. 5. Decoration of books - illustration, illumination, introduction to graphic techniques, their main division. Identification of graphic techniques on given examples. 6. Book bindings - parts of binding, technique. Different kinds of bindings based on their age (specifics of Gothic binding), division of bindings basen on coverage. Description of binding. 7. Notes from owner and reader. Supralibros and exlibris. Description of bibliofilia. 8. Principles of cataloguing of an old print. Description of an old print. 9. Principles of cataloguing of an incunable. Interpretation of description of incunable. 10.-11. Principles of description of manuscripts. Interpretation of description of manuscript. 12. History of church libraries in the Czech lands. Inventories of manuscripts and incunables of those libraries. 13. First public libraries in the Czech lands. History of private and family libraries in the Czech lands. Inventories of manuscripts and incunables of those libraries, orientation in online catalogues.

Learning outcomes
Aim of this course it to teach students principles of description of manuscripts and inkunables and to understand such descriptions and use them in their work. Another aim is to enable students to catalogue old prints and bibliofilias. It is important for students to learn terminology during theoretical introductions and methodology and also to notice characteristics, which are key to description of particular volume. Students will learn how to interpret information found in catalogues, inventories and descriptions of particular volumes and how to work with those works. Students will also be introduced to Bible and liturgical books, bindings and graphic techniques, and also to the history of historical funds of Czech and Moravian libraries.
Student will understand principles for description of an old print and incunable, will be able to describe an old print or bibliofilia. He or she will have to know terminology and to learn to recognize written and printed scripts, different kind of graphic techniques and forms of book binding.
Prerequisites
Knowledge from courses Auxiliary Historical Disciplines 1 and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines 2.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Attendance at least 80%. Written test (description of an old print, interpretation of description of manuscript, test in terminology).
