Course content
Seminar topics: 1. Introduction to heraldry as Auxiliary Historical Discipline, with coats of arms and reasons of their origin. Parts of full coat of arms and their blazon. Heraldic tinctures and their hatching. Shapes of shields, types of helmets. 2. Literature. Heraldic figures (Ordinary) I. - splitting of the shield. 3. Heraldic primary sources. Heraldic figures (Ordinary) II. - splitting of the shield. 4. Herald, heroldy. Charges I. - principles for description of people, animals and birds, beast and creatures. 5. Right to bear a shield, improvement and loss of the coat of arms. Charges II. - artificial pieces, especially blazon of buildings and crosses. 6. Blazon of other parts of full coat of arms - helms, mantling, helm crowns and jewels. 7. Achievements I. - orders and order decorations, rank insignia, hats and crowns. 8. Achievements II. - supporters, banners, trophies and more. 9. Description and blazon of particular heraldic monuments. 10. Introduction to sfragistic as Auxiliary Historical Discipline, literature. Seal in the Antiquity, Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, right to own a seal, its function. 11. Types of seal, different kind of seal of a single owner. Forgeries and abuse of seal. External characteristics of seal - material, size and shape, ways of attachment to deed. 12. Internal characteristics of the seal. Text on seal, rules of transcription of the text. Field of seal - frame, scene and background. 13. Principles of description of the seal and its application on particular material.

Learning outcomes
Aim of the heraldry seminar is to provide students with necessary information about this Auxiliary Historical Discipline, literature and rules connected with the use of coat of arms. General aim is to teach students to blazon full coat of arms with achievements and to instil them with principles for description of particular heraldry sights. Aim of the sfragistic seminat is to provide students with necessary information about literature and the use of seals in the Antiquity, Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Presentations will focus on characteristics of seal and ways of its description.
Student is able to blazon coat of arms with achievements and is able to describe particular heraldic monuments and different kind of seals and stamps. At the same time is aware of the legal consequences connected to use of seal and coat of arms. Student is able to identify and interpret important features of coat of arms or seal an knows literature, heraldic and seal registers which can help to identify the owner of the coat of arms or seal.

Student performance, Written exam

Attendance at least 90%. Written test (blazon of four shields, two full coat of arms and description of two seals).
