Course content
Focus of the course is to introduce students to the development of the ideas and opinions of the Czech historians and classic philologists about the importance of the antiquity as a historical period and also presentation of topics of the Czech historiography. It will also pay attention to the important university departments, science institutions and professional and amateur societies of Czech historians of antiquity. Important part in the development of the research of the antiquity also hold scientific and popular educational magazines. Lecture and seminar will also focus on important figures of Czech historiography of antiquity.

Learning outcomes
Main aim of the course is to introduce students with the development of opinions of the 20th century Czech historians about antiquity, its meaning in the development of human society and its contribution for the following historical periods. It will focus on important topics in the historians works, research within the institutions and its priorities, and also important figures.
Acquiring knowledge about the Czech research on antiquity in the 20th century (trends, topics, institutions, societies, important figures).

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Seminar: written book review. Exam: discussion about recommended reading, discussion about one chosen question from the course topics.
