Learning outcomes
This course will focus on the issue of prehistoric and protohistoric sources (mainly immovable ones) and on their interpretation in the context of prehistoric and early historical development in Europe. The course will be divided into four main parts: the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Hallstatt Period, protohistory and ancient to early medieval written sources. For the work with the sources, they will be used key sites from three main periods (Stone Age, Bronze Age and Hallstatt period, protohistory). A model site will be chosen for each of these historic periods: a settlement, a cemetery and other (religious, communication or exploitation sites etc. - according to the specific questions solved in individual historical periods). Archaeological and historical sources will be interpreted from diverse aspects on the basis of characteristic sites (eg., Mušov for the Roman period). The lecturer will give a special attention to different forms of archaeological features, their identification and classification. The fourth part of the course will discuss the meaning of historical (written) sources for protohistoric settlement in Central Europe beyond the borders of the ancient world. The aim of this course is to acquaint students with various types of sources and their interpretations as well as to stimulate their potential in analysis and source critique in the context of archaeological, historical and environmental research.
