Introduction Magic, religion and science (Mauss) Holy wizards and Church magic (Gentilcore) Occult philosophy and Renaissance Magi (Yates) The possessed of Loudun (de Certau) Demonological debates (Caro Baroja) Theory a practice of witchcraft: The magistrates (Clark) Theory a practice of witchcraft: The bewitched (Sharp) Theory a practice of witchcraft: The witch (Briggs) Gender and witchcraft Epilogue: vampirism, folklore, revivals

Learning outcomes
The seminar concerns witchhunts in Europe in the 15th ? 18th centuries. These will be examined in the wider context of the than imagination about the enchanted world. As the base for each seminar, the given texts will be used.
Student is able to see the phenomena of witchcraft from diverse points of view.
Prerequisites
Students should be able to read the texts in English language.

Oral exam, Essay, Student performance

Presence in the lessons, reading of the assigned texts, essay.
