Course content
Short introduction into the development of genealogy and available literature will be followed by the introdution into the terminology of conventional signs in creating the relatives charts. The various types of material sources available for the genealogical research and their use will be discussed. Except for these sources and knowledge of their utilizability, students should manage also terms (in Czech, Latin and German) for various matters that can occur during the work with sources. The brief introduction related to inscriptions, terminology, metodology, development of this field, basic literature and the most important editions will provide studnets a certain overview of ancient, christian, medieval and early modern epigraphics. A part of it will be the explanation of inscriptions in Czech lands and practical example of various ways of reproduction and learning rules for a decsription of inscriptions. HF

Learning outcomes
The aim of lectures is to give students the basic overview of both fields of study, their history, literature (including programmes available at the internet) and basic terminology. A student should get a wide range of related information connected with various sources for genealogical research and also rules for the inscription´s description, its critique and interpretation. The aim of seminars is to teach students to work with various sources used for genealogical research and prepare a corresponding presentation of this research in the form of relatives charts etc. In epigraphics, the aim will be to acquaint students with making the inscription´s description of a good quality. A student gains knowledge of terminology, literature and history of genealogy and epigraphics, learns to search and process genealogical information got from different types of sources and knows rules of the inscription´s description. HF
Prerequisites
The certain knowledge of paleography is supposed. HF

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Credit requirements: making a relatives chart and a description of a chosen inscription. Oral exam will be based on recommended literature and lectures. HF
