Course content
In first lessons there will be a commentation about the topic "Theory of printed books" and an introduction of scholarly literature. Than there will be a lecture about a history of printing press since 15th century to modern times, both in Europe and Czech lands. The attention of lectures will also be paid to an artistic side of a book and to changes of a role of books in the time. In further lectures students should learn about professional terms for a description of external forms of old prints (binding and its techniques, dating, types of printed fonts, graphic techniques etc.). Students will also apprised with lists and catalogues of first prints and old prints and with guides about important collections. In a seminar students should learn to perfectly understand principles of a description of old prints, which they should be able to use in a practice. PZ

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course it to provide to students a basic summary of history of a letterpress printing (technology, important printers and printing houses, publishers), historical and contemporary libraries (with emphasis on Czech lands). The issue will be added with information about the origin of letterpress printed books, their external forms and a content. The part of lectures will be a topic of history of a research of printed books, overview of technical terms, literature and basic aids. The aim of the course is to teach students to work with old prints, to understand those prints in a way, which allows to create catalogue list of any old print. PZ
A student is able to use professional terms when describing a book, he/she also knows basic literature and aids and has a knowledge about the history of the book printing, both in Czech lands and in Europe. Student is able to catalog an old print according to professional rules. PZ

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance

Active participation in seminars. To get credits students have to create 10 catalogue records of old prints, oral exam will be based on questions specified in advance. PZ
