Course content
The course concentrates on all historical sources which can be used for the study of medieval history. The attention is paid mainly to analysis and criticism of these sources. The seminar deals with narrative sources (aimed at historiography, hagiography but also medieval beletry)and sources of diplomatic character, which are often omitted. Various documents as well as city and office books will be examined as regards their content and formal aspects. Translations (a lot of sources are available in editions and digitalized versions at a webpage of the Department of History, Palacký University) and also original language versions will be used; original manuscripts or printed documents are available in the archive and Research Library in Olomouc and will be used in the course. The course will be aimed at European sources, however the attention will be paid especially to Central European sources (Czech, Austrian, German, Polish and Hungarian). The goal of this course is to acquaint students with various kinds of sources and to deepen their skills in an analysis and criticism of sources (manuscripts as well as editions) and utilizability of auxiliary sciences of history (paleography, codicology, diplomatics, sphragistics etc.) in practice. Learning outcomes
Students will be familiar with medieval historical sources, their typology and utilizability. This course is established under the terms of the project Innovation of Historical Sciences Studies at Palacký University, CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0025. HF
A student gains the overview of different types of medieval historical sources, their editions, value and methods of their utilizability. HF
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of medieval history. HF
