Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Brief introduction to Auxiliary Historical Disciplines, introduction to reading of neo-gothic cursive (kurent). 2. Terms of transcription and transliteration, transcription rules for Czech language. 3. Introduction to Heraldry, brief history of the field, shapes of shields, helmets and tinctures. 4. Basics of coat of arms blazon, ordinary - introduction. 5. Ordinary - multiple partitions. 6. Ordinary - partitions combinations. 7. Charges - introduction, basics of description of artificial figures (things). 8. Charges - description of people, animals and familiar figures. 9. Charges - description of buildings. 10. Charges - description of crosses. 11. Description of full coat of arms - introduction. 12. Description of full coat of arms - completion. 13. Specifics of description of particular heraldic pieces. Seminars will focus on practical training of knowledge from the lectures and practising of reading historical texts written in neo-gothic script.

Learning outcomes
Main aim is to introduce students of Art History to Auxilliary Historical Disciplines, especially those which they can use in their work. Winter semester is focused mainly on Heraldry and early modern palaeography.
Student will be able to read simple texts in neo-gothic script (kurent) and to blazon full coat of arms (without achievements).

No specific prerequisities.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Written exam

Active participation at least 90%, homework, written practical test (including transcription of Czech kurent and blazon of four coat of arms).
