Learning outcomes
This course focuses on the modern economic history, i.e., roughly from 1776 to 2008. It will be told from the Western perspective, but attention will be placed also on the global development: in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Although the focus will be on economy, the social history will be taken into consideration as well. This course will also try to present the important milestones of the economic development of the World: the so-called Industrial revolution(s), Great Depression of 1929, War economies, ideological battle between capitalism and communism during the Cold War, and globalization after 1980s.
After the completion of this course, students will be able to understand the economic and social development of the World in past 250 years and place them into the proper context of history. They will understand, how the economy influenced the societies and what were the important turning points in the economic history. They will also comprehend how has economy worked from the global perspective because they will present a paper on some important issues of it.

Attendance and activity in class - 20 % (Only two unexcused absences will be permitted) Presentation - 30 % (Student will explain in the class one of the important economic terms: GDP: nominal, per capita and PPP; Inflation, stagflation, deflation, devaluation; Informal and formal economics; Interest rates; Trade balance; Payment balance; Exchange rate and its development; Mercantilism; Physiocratism; Classical liberalism; Classical conservatism; Socialism; Modern liberalism - Keynesianism; Neoliberalism) Test - 30 % (Multiple choice and short semi-open questions) Book Review - 20 % (2 to 3 normpages - 3600 to 5400 characters with spaces of a book about the Economic history)
