Learning outcomes
The History of the Iberian Peninsula course focuses on the development of this area in a historical perspective. It covers the period from Antiquity to the present, focusing on the most important issues and features of each epoch. The whole course is conceived as "selected chapters", but we will follow them chronologically so that students can better understand the continuity of the Pyrenean life. In the first block, we will focus mainly on the history of Portugal and its overseas possessions in the Middle Ages and early modern times, and we will also focus on the history of Spain and its colonies in the New World. The second block focuses on the gradual decline of the global empires of Spain and Portugal in the 18th and 19th centuries. The conclusion of the course deals with the 20th century, the analysis of Iberian dictatorships, their fall and the aftermath. After completing this optional course, the student understands the patterns and features of development in the southwestern tip of Europe. He is able to analyse, identify and evaluate the processes of political development and the transformation of socio-economic structures typical of the Iberian Peninsula and its colonies in the New World and elsewhere. The student should be able to analyse local problems, not as a series of facts and data, but instead should be able to interpret each of the facts in the broader and deeper context of today's and historically globalized world. Students should also deepen their critical thinking, precisely in the spirit of René Descartes: Cogito ergo sum.
The aim of this course is to present the historical, social and economic perspective and to introduce students to the most important features of the Iberian Peninsula region. There is no need for prior knowledge because one of the goals is to broaden and deepen students' knowledge from grammar school and bachelor program. We will focus primarily on the wider context of this area and not on facts. Emphasis will be placed on the involvement of Spain and Portugal in the World history.
