Course content
"Posttraumatic" Czech Theatre and Drama after 1989 to the Present 1. Context of 1989 and the two following decades. The concept of "post-traumatic" theatre: The transformation of the theatre network will be conceptualized as a form of social trauma, followed by crisis in theatre dramaturgy and spectating. The post-1989 years will be contrasted to the the period "after the trauma" and the way in which theatre built its position in in the democratic-capitalist society. We will also discuss the transformation of media reflection on theatre. 6.- 10. Main trends in drama and theatre in the individual decades: the "new playwrights", coolness drama and theatre, modern cabarets, alternative theatre, intermediality, documentary and political theatre, adaptive strategies, and new circus. These issues will be demonstrated on the specific companies, personalities, and productions. 11. -12. Summary of themes, creative trends, and tendencies discussed in the course. Student presentations of selected topics.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture in LS 2023 is to introduce the development of Czech theatre and drama from 1989 to the present. The lecture focuses on the context of the year 1989, the process of transformation of the theatre system, and its consequences. Students will be introduced to selected theatre companies, personalities, key productions, dramaturgy, and aesthetic form of drama and its performance in each decade, focusing on the specific poetics of the individual directors and playwrights.
Student will acquire complex overview of Czech theatre functions and forms in the different periods of the social evolution till the end of the 20th century. Student will know the contemporary historical admission to the research of theatre of the 20th century and he could orientate in larger context of the second half of the 20th century. Student will characterize creation of particular theatres and popular theatre personalities, he will define profile creative conceptions using learned terminology and demonstrate their meanings on the concrete inscenations. Student will be able to valorize theatre conceptions connected with personalities of Czech theatre of the second half of the 20th century and to judge their meanings in continuation of theatre development. He could struct monitored period by using the contemporary historical admissions, he could analyze the particular tendencies and theoretically and historically specify their dominant aspects, also their movement and their mutual coherences. Student will be capable to formulate his opinion of the modern history of Czech theatre on the ground of his knowledge, he could appreciate the texts with special issues, apply the coherences of historical progress of particular tendencies to the reflection of contemporary image of dramatical creation.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of general historical context of the 20th century and basic terminology of theatre theory.
