Course content
Evangelization of Europe - Franks, Germanic tribes, Anglo-Saxons, Slavs. The development of religious and political circumstances in Byzantium. The split of the Eastern and Western Churches. Sts Cyril and Methodius´s missions. Gregorian reform, the Church emancipation and the zenith of papal power. The Crusades. The Church in the Medieval Czech state. The development of new forms of monastic life. The Mendicant orders. The fight of the Papacy and imperial power in the Middle Ages. Medieval heresies, the councils of the Late Middle Ages in Lateran and Lyon. Medieval man, his world and religiosity. Devotio moderna. The Avignon Papacy and the Great Papal Schism. The Church in Czech Lands in the period of Luxemburg rule. The Hussite movement, the Hussite wars and the development of the Czech Church in the 15th century. The Council of Vienne, Constance and Basel. Conciliarism.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to understand the Church history in the Middle Ages in various manifestations of its life.
Students will learn to understand the continuity, complexity, and relativity of the historical development of the Church in the Middle Ages and to be able to form their own judgement on the activities in the present.
