Course content
|
Special characteristics of the Ancient development of the Church, its division into periods, and historiography. The beginnings and development of the Church, the apostolic and post-apostolic period. Main features of the religious mentality of man in the Hellenic period. Gnosis. Manicheism. Mithraism. The Jewish background of Early Christianity. Jews in the Ancient world. The spread of Christianity and its persecution. Constantinian shift and its impact on the structure of the state and the Church in Late Antiquity. The beginnings of the institution of Papacy, the main figures and movements in the development till the period of Gregory the Great. The beginnings of monasticism. Main characters of the Church Fathers and their work placed into the context of the development of Ancient christian literature and theological cognition. Synodality in the Ancient Church in the example of great ecumenical councils of Antiquity. The relation of the Church to heresies, the impact of heresies on the development of the teaching. The migration of nations and the downfall of the Western Roman Empire. The beginnings of evangelization of Germanic tribes. The Church in the beginning Byzantine Empire.

|
The aim of this course is to understand the Church history in Antiquity in various manifestations of its life and acquisition of basic prerequisites to gain knowledge of patristic theology.
Students will learn to understand the continuity, complexity, and relativity of the historical development of the Church in Modern Times and to be able to form their own judgement on the activities in the present.
