Course content
|
Through presentations and the team seminar papers and with the help of panel discussions the following topics will be discussed: 1) functional language concepts and functional grammar (V. Mathesius) vs. / and cognitive grammar (R. Langacker) and construction grammar (W. Drift) 2) the dichotomy of center and periphery (F. Daneš, P. Sgall), the problem of vagueness (Neustupný), the theory of prototypes (E. Rosch) and the categorization of linguistic units (G. Lakoff) 3) functional sentence perspective, semantic and pragmatic parameters 4) sentence patterns (F. Daneš) and construction grammar 5) the construction of grammar through semantic base (J. Kořenský), the theory of prototypes and structural grammar, 6) the importance of the notion of the word, consistency of form and meaning in functionalism and cognitive linguistics (L.A. Janda), structure as a combination of form and meaning (Fried, Jan-Ola Östman) 7) cognitive grammar and descriptions of Czech (L.A. Janda, I. Vaňková, I. Nebeská, etc.) 8) reflection of poetic function of language (Mukařovský J., R. Jakobson), communicational and pragmatic turnover and cognitive linguistics

Learning outcomes
|
The optional seminar deals with relationships and similarities vs. differences between theoretical and methodological foundations of Czech functionalism and cognitive grammar. Special attention is also given to one of the components of cognitive linguistics, i.e. construction grammar.
Ability to compare the theoretical and methodological bases of linguistic functionalism and cognitive linguistics
