Learning outcomes
The main objective of this course is to acquaint students with two main approaches to an issue of human sexuality: biological determinism and socio-cultural determinism. The main idea of the course is emphasis on dealing with these two approaches as interlinked and mutually balanced. Human sexuality is viewed in a historical context, from an evolutionary perspective, but also from the perspective of psychological, sociological and political sciences, though the greatest emphasis is given to biological, medical, culturological and ethological perspectives. Sexuality, including reproductive and non-reproductive sexual behavior, is customarily considered dichotomically, i.e. from masculine or feminine point of view. This perspective is, however, greatly simplified, sometimes even distorted. These issues, among others (including the topic of sexual identity, sexual orientation and sexual emotions) will be discussed in this course. A special attention will be paid to possible varieties of sexual behavior including also those sexual practices that can be considered as minority or alternative. They will be analysed through a culturally relativist approach. The course will also deals with an issues of sexuality in art and virtual sexuality.
After completing the course, students should: - to have via comprehensive theoretical knowledge of anthropology of sexuality in the application to nursing care; - acquire and consolidate practical skills to teach sexual issues in secondary schools.
