Course content
Definition of health and disease. National Program of Preparation for Ageing. National Action Plan Supporting Positive Ageing for 2013-17. Demographic development of aging in Europe, industrialized countries, and third world countries. Society-wide consequences of population aging. Problematics of self-sufficiency and dependence in old age. Intercultural differences in longevity of the population. Influence of lifestyle on longevity. Aging theory. Protective factors during aging. Health conditions and problematics of polymorbidity among elderlies. The most frequent diseases in old age. Complex health and social care of the senior citizens. Gerontologic prevention and elderly care ethics. Social exclusion of elderlies and its consequences. Preparation for aging from the point of view of health condition care, psychical well-being, and social integration. The options for psychic activization of elderlies. The importance of exercising and suitable choice of physical activity for elderlies. Long-life education - forms, resources, and potential benefits for the development of personality in old age. Civic association ŽIVOT 90 and its importance for elderlies. Senior clubs - their importance and position in the life of elderlies. Elderlies as victims of domestic violence. Addiction syndrome of elderlies - non-substance, substance and psychical addiction. Means of help and therapy approaches. Sexual activity of elderlies and its disorders. The approach of the public towards this topic. Bio-psycho-socio-spiritual problematics of elderlies entering the institutional care. Thanatology and problematics of dying and death in today's society.

Learning outcomes
After passing the course, Active Aging students should be able to: - Define the fundamental theories of aging in context with health and disease theories, protective factors during aging, - Characterize the physiologic and pathologic processes of aging from the point of view of the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual aspect, - Explain the nowadays and past problematics of aging with regards to the intergenerational relationships, - Clarify the state of polymorbidity in one's old age and evaluate the optimal approach towards this phenomenon while considering the prevention options, - Find the relation between a prediction of demographic development in society and the present needs of the elderlies, detect and evaluate the signs of ageism in society, - Analyze the national programs and strategies of positive aging of the population in the 21st century, - Explain the advantages of the lifelong education for life quality of the preelderly and elderly, - Argue for the principles of proactive health approach with regards to the process of aging in the preelderly stage, - Evaluate the problematics of dying and death in today's Czech society.
After passing the course students should be able to: - Define the basic theories of health and disease, - Define the fundamental aging theories, - Explain the nowadays and past problematics of aging, - Describe the positives of Long-life education, - Argue for the principles of proactive health approach during aging, - Characterize the physiological and pathological processes of aging from the somatic and psychic point of view, - Detect and evaluate the signs of ageism in society, - Clarify the importance of polymorbidity, Evaluate the problematics of dying and death in today's Czech society.
Prerequisites
The discipline is designed for the students of "Učitelství odborných předmětů pro zdravotnické školy" (Teacher Training of Vocational Subjects for Medical schools).

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Seminar Work

Complete the terms given by the teacher at the beginning of the semester. Student elaborates a final paper on given topic (5 standard pages A4 including the bibliographic references according to norm the ISO 690. Moreover, a student has to place the final paper into the Portál UP portal.upol.cz (section "My studies" "Semestral works). The final paper automatically undergoes plagiarism control.
