Course content
|
The course deals with the most important features of English pronunciation. It also focuses on current models of English pronunciation (RP, BBC English, General American) and phonemic transcription (IPA) and different treatments of aspects of pronunciation in various monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is a basic understanding of the segmental and suprasegmental features of English pronunciation in comparison with the Czech pronunciation system and acquisition of comprehensible English pronunciation. Pronunciation practise lessons correspond with the subject matter introduced in more theory-oriented on-line study material.The aim of these seminars is the application of all aspects of pronunciation so that the students are able to improve their pronunciation gradually and use electronic and paper resource materials efficiently when practising and (self-) evaluating their pronunciation.

Prerequisites

Proficiency in English at B2.1 and a successful completion of school leaving exam in Czech.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Mark, Oral exam, Written exam, Student performance
At least 80% presence in lessons(70% individual study plan students). Continuous requirements: Two written tests during the term (1-segmental pronunciation features, 2-suprasegmental pronunciation features). If one or both tests are failed, there are two more options to pass a credit test, this time, however, covering all the contents of the course. This comprehensive test is also compulsory for students Examination requirements: Mainly practical oral examination will be focused on reading aloud, answering questions related to the specific pronunciation features of the text and transcriptions of selected words. Students are entitled to two retakes. Successful completion of the course requires an adequate performance (minimum of 70% achievement) in all of these.
