Course content
It covers definition of basic terms including definition of the tropics and description of the key features dealing with the topic of tropical botany, such as: tropical climate, characteristics of tropical biomes and azonal and extrazonal tropical vegetation, introduction to tropical ecology, phytogeographical characteristics of the tropics, biologically important and distinct tropical plant taxa, tropical crops and utility plants and nature conservation in tropic regions. The course also includes an excursion to greenhouses of Palacký University and Prague Botanical Garden. 1. Climate and biogeography 2. Phytogeography 3. Important and distinct tropical plant taxa 4. Learning outcomes
The course provides a basic overview on the tropical botany.
Student would be able to - define main biotic and abiotic factors of tropic and temperate climatic zones - define important tropical vegetation types - recall important tropical taxa - recall important tropical crop and utility plants - popsat významné rostlinné taxony tropů - popsat významné tropické kulturní a užitkové rostliny
Prerequisites
The course is recommended for students of master programme in botany. However, any other students of various master programmes interested in the field of tropical botany are welcome as well. The course requires certain degree of basic knowledge in botanical fields (Systematics, Phytogeography, Ecology etc.), therefore it is generally not suitable for students of bachelor study programmes.
