Course content
Biological indicators. Characteristics and types of bioindication. Basic methodology, biological variables, environmental and biotic indicators. Bioindication of air pollution by wood-destroying fungi, lichens and mosses. Use of lichens as testing organisms. Bioindication of eutrophication of water - "water bloom and vegetation hue". Fungi and yeasts as indicators of water saprobity. Biomonitoring of freshwater, water quality monitoring, saprobic index. Saprobiological water evaluation based on the analysis of zoocoenoses. Use of aquatic macrophytes to indicate water pollution and for tertiary wastewater treatment. Ruderal communities as bioindicators. Indicatingly significant species of the ichtyofauna of the CR. Biomonitoring as a science. Monitoring of species and their protection. Monitoring of the succession of biocoenoses in natural and anthropogenic ecosystems, classification of relictness of the presence of representatives of bioindicatingly significant groups of animals. Indicators for naturalness of biocoenoses in specific types of habitat. Monitoring of the succession of biocoenoses in natural and anthropogenic ecosystems. Landscape monitoring, degree of the landscape deterioration. Prehistoric and historic changes in the landscape due to the effect of human activities.

Learning outcomes
General part of lecture series will provide students with brief principles and methodological fundamentals of bioindications (and of biomonitoring) - integral part of the evaluation of all types of environments. Special part will focus on examples of both the classical bioindication methods working with traditionally used parameters such as diversity of communities, saprobic valence and bioindicative weight of species and methods based on the use of knowledge of ecology (bionomics) of selected groups of fauna and flora.
