Course content
Theory and history of restoration: 1. Introduction to the theory of restoration and its origins in the 18th century. 2. Changes in restoration theory in 19th century Europe. 3. Contemporary Italian restoration theory. 4. Restoration in the Czech Republic and Slovakia: its birth, key personalities, specifics on a European scale and differences in current legislation between Czech and Slovak conservation. 5. European restoration charters and ethical principles of restoration. Restoration practice: 6. Art techniques and materials in restoration practice. 7. Preventive restoration, documentation and handling of art objects. 8. Restoration of easel paintings and works on paper. 9. Mural painting, sgraffito and stucco. 10. Petrification and gilding of wooden sculptures and restoration of their polychromy. Interdisciplinary research cooperation: 11. Multimodal investigations with a focus on understanding the stratigraphy of the painting. Commissioning and interpretation of material surveys by an art historian. 12. X-ray based imaging methods. 13. Imaging using the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students of art history with a comprehensive view of the theory and practice of conservation and restoration. Students will acquire knowledge of the beginnings and development of European national schools of restoration and their theories. In addition, the course focuses on cases of collaboration between art historian, restorer and technologist in researching the artistic, historical and technical specificities of works of art. The student will be introduced to key restoration practices for the restoration of easel paintings, works on paper, murals, and polychrome sculpture.
The course will provide art history students with a basic overview of theory and practice in the sphere of restoration and interdisciplinary research of works of art.
Prerequisites
The student should be familiar with the basics of art history, terminology, styles, etc.
