Course content
1. Changes of rationality in 19th and 20th century architecture 2. Between ratio and emotion: Biedermeier - Art Nouveau - Art déco - Brutalism 3. "In what style should we build?": Seeking the style of the new era 4. Historicism in 19th and 20th century architecture 5. Civilization et / versus culture: 19th century architecture as a civilization and cultural factor, influence of modern technology 6. Home and world: international and regional aspects in 19th century architecture; vernacularism 7. 19th century architecture as a developmental cycle; influence of biogenetic method on interpretation of architecture; Gottfried Semper 8. Institutional anchoring of architectural creation: academy - polytechnic - art association - professional journals 9. Architecture and state: forms of monumentality; architecture as a representation of ideology

Learning outcomes
Lecture focused on architecture of the years 1780-1938 in Europe and the USA with an emphasis on general principles, identical or analogous phenomena and specific qualities.
Deeper understanding of architecture in Central Europe in the long 19th century (1780-1914) and mastering analytical skills in relevant research.
Prerequisites
Completion of bachelor studies.

Oral exam

Oral examination of knowledge of the topics discussed.
