Course content
1) Introdution: What do we study in the paintings? 2) An example of the study and interpretation of a selected painting. 3) Wall painting techniques (buon fresco technique, secco additions, terminology, tempera wall paintings, the transfer of wall paintings). 4) Paintings 1 (Dimensioning, cataloguing, oil painting, tempera, base layers) 5) Paintings 2 (Colours and colour relationships and contrasts (typology, three basic types of contrast, the color design of space in paintings). Composition of painting (colour, light and linear elements; historical examples of frequent types of compositions). 6) Perspective and linear construction of space in painting.

Learning outcomes
Lectures introduce the basic concepts of the theory of creation and perception of painting in the past and present. Practical examples illustrate the principles of linear, color, compositional, spatial, expression, and material construction of paintings, and means of expression in painting.
Survey of basic terms of the theory of the creation and of the reception of a painting from the classical antiquity to the 20th century and of the principles of the linear, colour, compositional, space, semantic and material construction of the painting.
Prerequisites
Interest in the field.

Written exam
