Course content
The course introduces students inot the current state of art in variation studies in languages of Asia, modern Englishes, as well as Czech. Students are led to the understanding of the role of language in communication and the function and context of communication in the society. The course maps variation along several dimensions, such as physical space (dialectal variation & contact), social stratification (slang, formal language, politeness, etc.), personhood and gender, etc. Students collaborate in small groups on their own research projects, where they design a study with its own appropriate methodology. The following topics are covered: i. language in society, land, class, diversity ii. identity and individualily iii. indexicality and repertoires iv. doing gender, class, friendship etc. v. conversation analysis vi. language shaping the mind

Learning outcomes
This course in an introduction to sociolinguistics. It is geared towards languages of Asia, but concepts are regularly illustrated with examples from Czech and other well-studied languages.

Prerequisites
Basic linguistic training is an advantage.

Analyssis of the Student's Portfolio, Seminar Work

i. class attendance ii. required readings and assingments (tutorial slips or diary) iii. final paper demonstrating student's analytical skills and familiarity with literature
