Course content
Lectures: The role of microorganisms in nature. Microbiology as a science: scope of the research field, its historical overview and personalities. The microbial cell structure: focused on bacteria. Nutrition and metabolism of bacteria (fermentation, respiration). Growth and cultivation of microorganisms, influence of environmental factors, compounds with antimicrobial activity and mechanisms of their effect. Genetic information, its transfer and potential for biotechnological applications. Proteosynthesis - its characteristics in bacteria. Microbial ecology, the importance if microorganisms in nutrient cycles. Mechanisms of symbiosis and pathogenesis, the interactions of microorganisms with humans, animals and plants. Bacteriophages. Taxonomy and phylogeny of Archea and Bacteria, characteristics of important microbial groups and taxa. Species of economic importance. Practicals: routine methods used for isolation, cultivation and identification of microorganisms.

Learning outcomes
Introduction of the microorganisms role in ecosystems, their characteristics and cultivation conditions.
After completing of the course the student should be able to: - construct a timeline of significant events in the history of microbiology and human diseases, indicate outstanding personalities and their contribution to development of microbiology - select and apply proper methods for determination of microorganisms in samples from various environments (water, air, soil, plant material, medicinal samples) - select staining methods and microscopy techniques to study cell structure - modify cultivation guidelines according to biology of microorganisms and their environmental requirements - apply principles of disinfection/sterilization during growth media preparation, inoculation and cultivation to avoid overgrowth of microorganisms in axenic cultures - show interactions of microorganisms with other (micro)organisms - apply knowledge on bacterial genetics in plant biotechnology
