Course content
|
Three-day field exercise is divided into two parts. First two days are devoted to the demonstration of a wide variety of ecological methodology (both plant and animal) and data collection. It takes place in selected field localities with contrasting habitats (forests, steppe) in the area of Central Moravia. The last day is devoted to the data analysis of samples in laboratory and data processing in PC lab. The course is finished by a seminar, in which student working groups present their results of selected topic. The following tasks are usually trained in the field: (i) analysis of vertical and horizontal spatial structures of plant populations, estimation of plant density, technique of phytosociological sampling, estimation of population structure of plants, (ii) estimation of selected chemical and physical soil characteristics (pH, soil depth), problems with measuring of light intensity, (iii) analysis of species composition in relation to the environmental variables, demonstration of various sampling techniques, (iv) assessment of environmental variables on the basis of bioindication, (v) permanent plots and the study of plant population dynamics, (vi) study of composition and distribution of selected groups of animals in various habitats. Learning outcomes
|
Improving practical experiences of plant and animal ecology in the study of natural populations and communities using various methodology. Student will sample, analyse and interpret ecological data.
Student should be able to (after attending the course): - Collect properly ecologic data in the field. - Process the sampled ecological material in the laboratory. - Analyse the ecological data using statistical metodology. - Present the data.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of systematics and ecology of plants and animals and basic knowledge of statistics.
