Course content
1. Basic terminology of coordination chemistry (revision) - complex, coordination number, ligand, types of complexes and ligands. Bonds in coordination compounds, metal-metal bonding, hydrogen bond, theories VB, MO, CFT, LFT. d-orbital splitting. 2. Introduction in transition metal chemistry - oxidation state, colour, magnetism. Coordination geometry - stereochemistry, hybridization, secondary hybridization, isomerism, electron spectra, magnetochemistry. Methods for preparation of coordination compounds - stability constants and their determination, solvent influence. Non-aqueous solutions. 3. Less common oxidation states. Mixed-valence complexes. Acid-base theories. Kinetics and mechanism of coordination compound reactions - substitution, electron transfer, ligand transfer. 4. Complexes with pi-acceptor ligands - carbonyls, cyanido, nitrosyl complexes, complexes with molecular nitrogen. Clusters. pi-complexes - olephines, metallocenes, sandwich compounds. 5. Homogeneous (Wilkinson´s catalyst; hydrogenation; dimerization and isomerisation of olephines; template synthesis) and heterogeneous catalysis (Fischer-Tropsch process, Ziegler-Natta catalyst, catalysis by metal clusters ...) 6. Selected biological systems (bioinorganic chemistry) and basic methods of characterization of coordination compounds

Learning outcomes
The lecture introduces students to basic concepts of coordination chemistry and describes the properties of coordination compounds with emphasis on preparation, bonding possibilities, structure and reactions.
Describe properties of coordination compounds with the emphasis on magnetic and spectral properties, synthesis, bonding possibilities, structure, reactions and application in practice.
