Course content
|
The aim of the lecture is to introduce students to the stylistic and developmental trends in European music in the 17th and 18 century. The starting point is the religious and ethnic division of Europe and its impact on the emergence of new stylish and different initiatives taken in the different parts of Europe. The aim is to teach students to recognize elements of various musical styles, their application, and changes in the overall musical development. Lectures: 1. Periodization, characteristics of the Baroque style 2. Birth of the opera (Monteverdi) 3. Italain opera seria (Scarlatti, Zeno, Metastasio) 4. French music dramatic genres (Lully, Rameau) 5. Oratorio (Carissimi, Caldara) 6. Vocal music of the Baroque (Purcell, Schütz) 7. Catholic church music (Fux, Zelenka) 8. Instrumental music (Corelli, Telemann) 9. Music for harpsichord/organ (Frescobaldi, Couperin) 10. Solo concerto (Vivaldi) 11. G. F. Händel 12. J. S. Bach

The mission of the lecture is to introduce to the students the stylistic and developmental trends in European music in the 17th and 18 century. Obtaining of the reliable orientation in the historic, stylish, functional, aesthetic and theoretical issues of music 17th and 18 century.
