The course History of Yugoslavia is focused on the history of this Balkan state during the 20th century. It will analyze the origin of the state, creation of Yugoslavia after the First World War, unstable beginnings of the first common South Slav State, the introduction of the Royal dictatorship in 1929, turn of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia toward Nazi Germany in the second half of the 1930s, occupation and division of state during the Second World War and resistance movements during the conflict. The course will also analyze the creation of Second Yugoslavia, and key features of its development: Socialism, self-management and Non-Alignment movement, and changes in the state's social structures through rapid industrialization, urbanization, the emancipation of the women, and other distinctive features of the second South Slav State. The course will focus on the economic and social development and the long-time Yugoslav leader's personality cult, Josip Broz Tito. The last classes will be devoted to explaining the causes of the crisis, which lead to Yugoslavia's break-up, wars for succession, and the post-transition development in the 1990s and until the present.
Upon completing this course, students will be able to identify and evaluate the different processes that lead to Yugoslavia's formation, development, and demise. |

Class participation (20 %) Essay (30%) Final exam (50%) The student's final mark will be composed of class attendance, essay evaluation, and final exam. The student will need to write a paper, on his topic of interest, with the usage of recommended or chosen literature. The paper should be around 3 to 5 pages, using references, footnotes, and bibliography. The final exam will be in the form of a test. |
