Course content
The lecture first describes general possibilities and patterns of literary-theoretical approaches to literary texts and situates them within the broader concepts of scientific theory. This is followed by a brief overview of the 'theory debate' of the 1980s and 1990s in German studies and the subsequent discussion about a cultural studies expansion of literary studies. The main part of the lecture deals with the literary theories currently applied in German literary studies. Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture is to provide students with the most important schools of literary theory, their history, approaches and methods.
Students will be able to define their own position in the spectrum of literary theory and they will be able to identify and classify literary theoretical methods when working with secondary sources.
Prerequisites
Intended primarily for the students of the master study program.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam

The lecture concludes with a written exam in which students are required to identify key arguments from literary theory texts. The relevant passages are discussed in advance during the lecture and made available in advance in the respective handouts.
