Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to explore the Baroque era from a general cultural perspective and from a specific literary perspective. We will focus primarily on German-speaking countries and examine how society developed in the German and Austrian principalities between the late 16th century and approximately 1760. The period we will be looking at therefore lies between Humanism/Renaissance and Romanticism. Because texts from this period are quite complex in language, your reading list will consist primarily of selections that are very short (especially poetry) or essays on specific topics from the Baroque or Enlightenment periods. The written exam will consist of several questions from the question catalogue (3 questions out of about 20) and 2 questions related to the texts discussed together in the handout. Attendance at the lecture is not mandatory.
The lecture aims at introducing students to the problems, issues and methods used in certain disciplines the knowledge of which is essential for the study of the German society and culture. Recently, a crucial role has been played by the discussed model "German studies as a cultural science". The resulting competence consists in: general knowledge of culture, history, art, thought etc. in German speaking countries and the ability to interpret a German text/Sachtext, complex as regards its content and linguistic features.
