Course content
This seminar focuses on the phenomenon of quality TV, which can be understood as a genre, a production category, an aesthetic concept, a marketing strategy, or all of the above. Although quality TV is often considered a contemporary phenomenon, it has a much longer history. The term began to be used in the 1980s, and it has changed throughout its forty-year history. This course will focus on what quality TV means in different eras of television, using specific examples to illustrate its evolution. The time schedule will be available in the Moodle before the beginning of the semester.

Learning outcomes
In winter semester 2025/26 lectured by dr. Feikusová Quality TV: From Hill Street Blues to Watchmen This seminar focuses on the phenomenon of quality TV, which can be understood as a genre, a production category, an aesthetic concept, a marketing strategy, or all of the above. Although quality TV is often considered a contemporary phenomenon, it has a much longer history. The term began to be used in the 1980s, and it has changed throughout its forty-year history. This course will focus on what quality TV means in different eras of television, using specific examples to illustrate its evolution.
Students will prove their ability to analyse particular problems from the field of television and media studies. Students will gain knowledge of the concrete topic on account of studying relevant methodological literature, individual work and collective discussion. Students will be able to competently evaluate selected TV and other media products, their dramaturgical prehension, realization or other distribution media industry contexts linked to these specific outputs.
