This course is a lecture that focuses on significant European cinematic avant-garde movements ranging from the early 20th century to the contemporary 21st century. The aim of this course is to give graduate students an understanding of how different cultural and historical factors give rise to cinematic movements. In order to pass this course, the student must attend a minimum of 75% of all lectures. In addition students must submit a short written analysis of one film from the course, due week 8, which analyzes the stylistic, formal, and/or ideological content of the film and the film movement from which it comes. There will be a final exam scheduled for exam period. It will consist of multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, short answer, and brief essay sections. To pass the course, students must score above 50% on the exam. All students will be allowed to use their own handwritten notes on the final exam. Students with academic accommodations from the study office (studijní oddělení) are invited to discuss their accommodations with me in private. ANY USE OF AI BEYOND GRAMMAR CORRECTION OR TRANSLATION IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
